sponsored by WABC Channel 7 & Newsday

ABOUT BASH

CONGRATULATIONS BASHers SEE YOU ALL IN 2025

The Broadcast Awards for Senior High, known as BASH, is an annual celebration of student broadcast journalism and video production founded by Southold School District in 2017.  BASH moved to its new home at the Lawrence Herbert School of Communication at Hofstra University in 2024. BASH is part awards ceremony and part learning conference for Long Island and Westchester high school students, teachers and school administrators involved in high school journalism programs and media production classes.

“From the perspective of a building principal, I think we should always contemplate ways to engage our students in real-world, authentic learning opportunities that are purposeful, stimulate high interest and tap into the passions of our students.  Broadcast media allows for the focus to be on music, the arts, sports, academic subject matter - anything that we encounter in our daily lives.”

- David Gamberg, former superintendent of Southold & Greenport Schools
Principal Leadership Magazine, November 2018

OUR VISION

BASH seeks to support and foster growth among high school students and educators interested in broadcast journalism, video production, media and communications by honoring their work and providing learning opportunities to develop and improve skills in these areas.

WHAT TO WEAR?

We highly encourage all students to look their best at BASH. Formal/semi-formal attire is acceptable. This is the Academy Awards of high school broadcast work after all!  So, don’t forget your best “BASH Attire,” as some students like to say!

WHAT TO BRING?

Bring your cameras, your microphones and your talent.  Be prepared to shoot a standup or create an "as live"  at the event.

HOW TO GET THERE?

Buses should drop off right outside of the School of Communication building. Students will be greeted there by Hofstra staff who will direct students to the Adams Playhouse.

The goal of this event is to showcase the talent in the growing broadcasting and film classes across Long Island.  The event looks to bring together the teachers, administrators, and (most importantly) the students that make up the next generation of media creators.
