HISTORY OF BASH

Begun in 2017 by the students of Southold High School to celebrate the video production work being done in the emerging field of broadcast production and digital storytelling in Long Island schools.  The first BASH was held at Southold High School and was attended by students from primarily Eastern Suffolk schools.  The conference included breakfast for the students, breakout sessions, lunch and the awards given out in seven categories.

In 2019 BASH grew and moved to Stony Brook University with students involved from many schools including several from Nassau County, with awards given out in 9 categories.  BASH's growth was slowed by the COVID pandemic cancelling the event in 2020 and forcing a virtual BASH in 2021.  In 2022 BASH returned to Stony Brook with students attending in person from close to 20 schools with many more participating virtually.  Awards were given out in nine categories after 84 submissions were received.

In January of 2023 BASH learned that it would need to find a new home for its conference.  A steering committee of teachers was formed and within weeks a new home, at Hofstra University's Lawrence Herbert School of Communication was found and registration was opened.  On May 15th the biggest BASH to date was held at the Cranford Adams Playhouse with over six hundred students from 42 schools including and for the first time ever, two from Westchester County,  in attendance.  Awards were given out in ten categories after over 130 submissions were received.

2024 was the biggest BASH ever with close to fifty schools and over a thousand students registered.  Awards were given out in twelve categories with over two hundred and twenty five videos submitted for consideration.
